Fujikura takes club fitting to a new level with GC2-powered simulation

Fujikura, the world-wide supplier of premium graphite shafts, is implementing the GC2 Smart Camera System into the company’s world-class testing and fitting programs. Beginning with an integration of the GC2 Smart Camera system with the company’s own proprietary ENSO 3D Club Fitting System, Fujikura is also adopting GC2-powered golf simulation in its corporate headquarters; taking advantage of the GC2’s unmatched ball performance data in a full simulation environment.

Enso uses Vicon’s proprietary high-speed motion capture and video cameras as well as custom designed software to capture in real-time, multiple dynamic measurements of the entire golf club including shaft deflection, club head speed and impact location. Enso provides an easy-to-use interface and extensive reporting capabilities to help golf professionals and professional club fitters prescribe the correct club to any level of golfer.

Enso is the initial technology produced by the newly formed partnership of shaft design and manufacturing leader Fujikura, Technical Academy-Award winning motion tracking company Vicon Motion Systems, Inc. and accomplished biomechanical sports performance company Bentley 3.

“For years, coaches and athletes have been looking at only impact and ball flight to correctly fit equipment to the golfer. Enso allows us to integrate biomechanics with motion tracking technology, now we can accurately measure swing and shaft performance before impact. This data produces a more precise fit and it enhances the golfer’s experience,” says Michael Bentley, CTO of Bentley 3.

“Enso is the next evolution in clubfitting that brings the art and science of clubfitting to golf in an easy-to-use technology,” David Schnider, President and COO of Fujikura. “It is the first and only solution that can actually measure the performance of the golf shaft before impact. In fact, Enso measures the deflection of the golf shaft during the complete swing at a very high frame rate and with sub-millimeter accuracy. We like to think of it as true science meeting the Golf channel with a bit of Hollywood mixed in.”

“Vicon is very excited to see our 25 years of biomechanics based software and award-winning cameras transform the golf fitting experience. Never before have golf professionals or club fitters been able to see such fine detail with true data to validate their prescriptions. Vicon is proud to provide the most accurate data in the motion capture industry, and by partnering with Fujikura and Bentley 3, we have been able to develop a full-scale solution specifically for the golf market. There is also the cool factor, now golfers are using the same technology used for the latest blockbuster films and video games,” says Douglas Reinke, CEO and President of Vicon.

“Brushing our teeth, shaving, riding a bike, tying our shoes, typing, playing a musical instrument, and salsa dancing are all examples of implicit or procedural memories.  All these habitual actions take place without too much of our conscious direction.  Remember these memories did not start out being automatic or implicit.  Initially, we had to consciously and repeatedly practice these skills; it took attention and a willful, focused effort to hardwire them.  When the mind has repeatedly instructed the body to perform an action, the body will begin to remember the action better than the thinking brain.  The mind and the body, both neurologically and chemically, will naturally move into a familiar state of being.  Eventually, we can reproduce the same neurological level of mind and internal chemical state of that associated event just by thought alone.  Implicit memories ultimately become our subconscious programs”- Dr. Joe Dispenza

Watch this video of Ben Hogan trying to hit balls to his caddie.  Before the days of motorized range pickers, Hogan would act like a sniper and try to hit his range ball at a very specific target: his caddy.  His goal was to minimize the amount of running for his caddie.

Too often we get caught up in swing technique and forget the importance of connecting to our target, ultimately leading to paralysis by analysis.  Remember there is a time to train and a time to play.  After you spend time working on your swing mechanics, be sure to hit balls where your only focus is on the target.  Play catch with an imaginary caddie.  After all, that is the purpose of golf, sending your ball to a specific target.
